Pope Marcellus Mass
November 22, 2025
8PM
St James Cathedral (804 9th Ave, Seattle)
In celebration of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina's 500-year birth anniversary, Cantorei, the professional vocal ensemble of St. James Cathedral, presents Palestrina's Pope Marcellus Mass along with music by his contemporaries Orlandus Lassus, Francisco Guerrero, and Tomás Luis de Victoria. Joseph Adam conducts.
The Missa Papae Marcelli, or Pope Marcellus Mass, is Palestrina's best-known mass, and one of the pinnacles of polyphonic choral music. It was written c.1562 in honor of Pope Marcellus II, who was pope for a mere three weeks in 1555.
